The Roaring Ones

Some nights welcome me to my pillow.  Others roar at me.  As if my sleeping neglects the thousands of worlds to be discovered in my lifetime.  The unwritten lines.  The deep complexity of nature’s nooks and crannies.

Tonight is one of those roaring nights.  When one possibility closes, thousands more open, demanding my attention and my loyalty.  I puttered around our neighborhood at midnight.  It is one of the few times of the day that the whisping of cars does not fill the streets.  The powerlines buzz.  The full moon gazes down on a sleeping city, wondering what fullness holds the hearts of men.

Each day a new event, with all its openings and anchors.  Those unexpected moments of discovery and stability.  New ground and maintenance.  I worked a couple of weeks ago in Santa Ana, advocating a government-sponsored tutoring service.  I went home-to-home, door-to-door.  Each family a new event.  Each person was not privy to the list of acceptances and rejections I had at the previous houses.  There was only now.  And the attitude I brought with me.
